1. Design summary
Two 2×6 boards laid flat form front and rear base skids (56.25″ long each). Four casters bolt through the skid corners. A 2×4 box frame (four upright 2×4s on edge, 56.25 × 30.50″ outer) sits on top of the skids and forms a continuous cradle with a ~2″ nominal retaining lip. The freezer rests on the open deck between the skids (and on the skid tops at the perimeter). No cross beams or corner blocks. Underside and compressor side (+X / right when facing front) stay open for airflow.

Casters mount at the four outer corners of the skid assembly with the mounting plate flush to the footprint edge (plate outer edges align with the 56.25 × 30.50″ outline — no overhang past the lumber). Bolt through the 2×6 at each corner. The 2×4 frame is screwed/bolted down to the skids after caster install.

3. Frame dimensions & lumber math
Standard dimensional lumber is nominal (2×4 actual = 1.5″ × 3.5″). Original sketch used 53 + 2 + 0.25 = 55.25″ assuming ~1″ per side; with real 2×4 on edge, outer dimensions are recalculated for ⅛″ side clearance:
| Item | Formula | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Inner clear width | 53.0 + 2×0.125 clearance | 53.25″ |
| Inner clear depth | 27.25 + 2×0.125 | 27.50″ |
| Outer width | 53.25 + 2×1.5 (rail thickness) | 56.25″ |
| Outer depth | 27.50 + 2×1.5 | 30.50″ |
| Rail height (2×4 on edge) | — | 3.5″ |
| Base skid (2×6 flat) | Actual 1.5 × 5.5″ | 56.25″ (qty 2) |
| Skid spacing | 30.50 − 2×5.5 (skid width) | 19.5″ open center |
| Retaining lip | Upper ~2″ of 3.5″ rail | 2.0″ |
| Front & rear rail | 2×4 on edge, full width | 56.25″ (qty 2) |
| Left & right rail | 2×4 on edge, between ends | 27.50″ (qty 2) |
| Floor → top of skids | 9⅜ + 1½ | 10⅞″ |
| Floor → top of 2×4 rail | 10⅞ + 3½ | 14⅜″ |
Orientation (Rev D)
- Base skids: Two 2×6 laid flat (1.5″ thick × 5.5″ wide), full 56.25″ length, at front and rear edges of the 30.50″ depth. Open gap between skids for compressor airflow.
- Casters: One at each footprint corner — plate outer edges flush with the 56.25 × 30.50″ outline (inset ~2¼″ from apex on width, ~2″ on depth). Bolt through the 2×6; no plate overhang past lumber edges.
- Box frame: Four 2×4 on edge (1.5″ thick × 3.5″ tall) form a closed rectangle — 56.25 × 30.50″ outer — sitting on top of the 2×6 skids. Surrounds and cradles the freezer base on all four sides.
- Load surface: Freezer rests on the skid tops inside the frame (open deck between runners). No cross beams or corner blocks.
- Retaining lip: Upper ~2″ nominal of each upright rail hugs the freezer base perimeter.
- Compressor side: Right side (+X) when facing front (−Z). Keep underside open; no solid deck under compressor step.

Mount each caster through its plate into the 2×6 base skid at each footprint corner. Position the plate so its outer edges align with the dolly outline — do not center the plate on the corner point (that overhangs ~2″ past the lumber).
5. Compressor clearance
NOVA45 has a bottom compressor step (9.75″ × 7.88″ × 21.0″) on the right side (+X) when facing the front. The box frame has no solid floor — underside remains open for ventilation. Orient compressor side over the open interior below the step.

7. Bill of materials
Verified against Summit NOVA45 specs (53.0 × 27.25 × 31.5″ cabinet; compressor step 9.75 × 7.88 × 21.0″). Frame math uses actual lumber sizes (2×4 = 1.5 × 3.5″; 2×6 = 1.5 × 5.5″).
Home Depot — lumber
| Buy | Item | Cut pieces | Notes |

| 1 | 2×6×10′ SPF stud (#2 or Premium) | 2× @ 56.25″ skids | 112.5″ used · 7.5″ scrap · laid flat |

Do not buy three 2×4s — two 8′ boards cover all four rails with room for saw kerf. Kiln-dried SPF is fine; pressure-treated is optional if the dolly will stay outdoors wet (adds weight).

Pre-build checklist (NOVA45)
- Remove factory casters from the freezer before test-fitting on the dolly.
- Confirm cabinet footprint is 53.0 × 27.25″ (measure your unit — handles and drain are above the base rail).
- Identify which side the compressor step is on; orient that side (+X / right when facing front) over the open gap between skids.
- With casters installed, floor → skid top = 10⅞″; compressor step bottom clears floor by ~1⅛″.
8. Assembly sequence
- Cut two 56.25″ base skids from 2×6 (laid flat). Position at front and rear of the 30.50″ depth — verify outer footprint 56.25 × 30.50″.
- Mount four casters at the footprint corners — align each plate's outer edges with the skid outline (inset from the corner apex; no overhang). Bolt through the 2×6. Lock brakes for assembly.
- Cut frame rails: two 56.25″ (front/rear) and two 27.50″ (sides) from 2×4. Assemble box frame on top of skids; screw/nail frame to skids at corners.
- Verify 56.25 × 30.50″ outer frame and that the center gap between skids stays open for compressor airflow.
- Remove NOVA45 factory casters. Lower freezer into box; base rests on skid tops inside the frame, upper ~2″ lip retains perimeter. Orient compressor (+X) over open underside.
- Test roll on asphalt/grass; verify brakes hold on a slight incline before market use.
9. Load & safety
| Scenario | Weight | Caster margin |
|---|---|---|
| Empty freezer + dolly (~40 lb wood) | ~175 lb | 4×550 = 2,200 lb rated set |
| Freezer + ~300 lb product | ~435 lb | ~20% of set rating |
| Planning ceiling | 500+ lb | Comfortable with purchased casters |
- Engage all four wheel brakes during service and when parked on any slope.
- Do not tow on public roads; casters are not highway-rated.
- Use a ratchet strap over the freezer to the dolly frame when rolling over rough terrain.
- Keep compressor vents unobstructed; never block with solid panels.
- Two-person lift recommended when loading/unloading the freezer.
