1. Design summary

Two 2×6 boards laid flat form front and rear base skids (56.25″ long each). Four casters bolt through the skid corners. A 2×4 box frame (four upright 2×4s on edge, 56.25 × 30.50″ outer) sits on top of the skids and forms a continuous cradle with a ~2″ nominal retaining lip. The freezer rests on the open deck between the skids (and on the skid tops at the perimeter). No cross beams or corner blocks. Underside and compressor side (+X / right when facing front) stay open for airflow.

Casters mount at the four outer corners of the skid assembly with the mounting plate flush to the footprint edge (plate outer edges align with the 56.25 × 30.50″ outline — no overhang past the lumber). Bolt through the 2×6 at each corner. The 2×4 frame is screwed/bolted down to the skids after caster install.

3. Frame dimensions & lumber math

Standard dimensional lumber is nominal (2×4 actual = 1.5″ × 3.5″). Original sketch used 53 + 2 + 0.25 = 55.25″ assuming ~1″ per side; with real 2×4 on edge, outer dimensions are recalculated for ⅛″ side clearance:

4. Casters — purchased hardware

Measure bolt holes on your physical casters before drilling. Amazon listing does not publish plate dimensions; values below match the 8″ knobby outdoor plate caster class (same form factor as your units). Confirm center-to-center spacing with a ruler on the received set.

Mount each caster through its plate into the 2×6 base skid at each footprint corner. Position the plate so its outer edges align with the dolly outline — do not center the plate on the corner point (that overhangs ~2″ past the lumber).

5. Compressor clearance

NOVA45 has a bottom compressor step (9.75″ × 7.88″ × 21.0″) on the right side (+X) when facing the front. The box frame has no solid floor — underside remains open for ventilation. Orient compressor side over the open interior below the step.

7. Bill of materials

Verified against Summit NOVA45 specs (53.0 × 27.25 × 31.5″ cabinet; compressor step 9.75 × 7.88 × 21.0″). Frame math uses actual lumber sizes (2×4 = 1.5 × 3.5″; 2×6 = 1.5 × 5.5″).

Do not buy three 2×4s — two 8′ boards cover all four rails with room for saw kerf. Kiln-dried SPF is fine; pressure-treated is optional if the dolly will stay outdoors wet (adds weight).

Measure your caster plates before drilling. Confirm plate is 4½ × 3-15/16″ and bolt CC is 2-13/16 × 3-3/8″. If your set differs, adjust corner inset — plates must stay flush to the 56.25 × 30.50″ footprint with no overhang.

Pre-build checklist (NOVA45)

8. Assembly sequence

  1. Cut two 56.25″ base skids from 2×6 (laid flat). Position at front and rear of the 30.50″ depth — verify outer footprint 56.25 × 30.50″.
  2. Mount four casters at the footprint corners — align each plate's outer edges with the skid outline (inset from the corner apex; no overhang). Bolt through the 2×6. Lock brakes for assembly.
  3. Cut frame rails: two 56.25″ (front/rear) and two 27.50″ (sides) from 2×4. Assemble box frame on top of skids; screw/nail frame to skids at corners.
  4. Verify 56.25 × 30.50″ outer frame and that the center gap between skids stays open for compressor airflow.
  5. Remove NOVA45 factory casters. Lower freezer into box; base rests on skid tops inside the frame, upper ~2″ lip retains perimeter. Orient compressor (+X) over open underside.
  6. Test roll on asphalt/grass; verify brakes hold on a slight incline before market use.
